Chinese pharmacopoeia is part of the system of traditional Chinese medicine. It is traditionally based on the combination of several substances in formulas selected according to the assessment made by the practitioner.

Phytotherapy refers more broadly to the use of plants for therapeutic purposes. Both approaches may therefore use plants, but their theoretical frameworks and the methods used to prepare the remedies differ.
