Ready to improve your digestive comfort?
Why have a colon hydrology test?
Constipation, bloating, a feeling of a swollen stomach, irregular bowel movements, or the sensation of incomplete evacuation… These digestive issues can have a significant impact on daily comfort and quality of life. The colon plays an essential role in digestion. These digestive issues can arise, in particular, when the colon’s function is disrupted.
The colon, also known as the large intestine, is the final part of the digestive system and is approximately 1.5 meters long (or longer in cases of dolichocolon). It performs several essential functions: it reabsorbs some of the water and minerals contained in food residues, helps form stool, and ensures its elimination. It also houses the gut microbiota, a community of billions of microorganisms that contributes to proper digestion and the body’s overall balance.
Its function can be affected by many factors, such as a low-fiber diet, inadequate hydration, a sedentary lifestyle, chronic stress, certain medications, hormonal changes, or certain digestive disorders. When bowel transit slows down, stool remains in the colon longer. It gradually becomes dehydrated, harder to pass, and can promote the fermentation of food residues. This fermentation can lead to digestive problems.
When these symptoms become persistent or recurrent, personalized care may be considered. Colon hydrology is one of the complementary approaches that can be offered to support the colon’s natural elimination functions and promote better digestive comfort. It is part of a comprehensive care plan tailored to your situation and needs.
Colonic hydration may also be recommended as part of preparation for a colonoscopy.
What is colon hydrology, colonic irrigation, or colon hydrotherapy?
Colonic hydrotherapy (also known as colonic irrigation or colon hydrotherapy) is a gentle technique that involves cleansing the large intestine using warm, filtered water. Performed by a trained therapist, it supports the colon’s natural elimination functions.
Unlike an enema, which acts primarily on the rectum and the lower part of the colon, colon hydrotherapy provides a more thorough cleansing of the large intestine through the gradual introduction of water in a closed system that ensures hygiene, comfort, and privacy.
This technique now benefits from modern equipment that allows sessions to be conducted under optimal conditions of safety and comfort.

What our patients say
Two years ago, I had a severe skin condition. Parts of my body were completely inflamed; it felt like shards of glass were scraping my skin. That was just the tip of the iceberg: the good bacteria in my gut flora were completely depleted, and I had to start from scratch.
Two years later, the problem has been resolved—or rather, it’s under control thanks to a treatment that’s working. This addiction isn’t without its consequences; I have to regularly monitor my overall health because such aggressive treatment inevitably affects the body’s overall balance (white blood cells, liver, lungs). I had the idea of trying colon hydrotherapy to start fresh and build a solid foundation for good health going forward. Taking care of your insides—clearing them of accumulated waste and giving them a deep cleanse—is, in a way, like looking after your life partner!Following the recommendations of the professionals Marie-Anne and Nathalie, I had two sessions in quick succession, then a final one two months later. It was to the most recent session that I reacted the fastest, as if this reactivated body had begun to show itself the moment I decided to take care of it.
It’s not easy to consider taking this step. Aside from *The Imaginary Invalid*, who makes us laugh with his obsession with enemas, we don’t readily focus on our stools. We’re not ready to tackle the problem at its root—that is, why our digestive system is causing us trouble, and what it’s trying to tell us through its signs of distress. When our insides go haywire, it means something is truly wrong!
In fact, when we go to the Clinique Naturelle for a session, we’re heading to our colon’s beauty salon. Everything is beautiful, bright, feminine, and cozy—and surprisingly, everything smells wonderful. Nothing reminds us of an enema—and that’s a good thing. What’s more—and this is essential—Marie-Anne and Nathalie have magic fingers; they massage us as our bellies fill with warm water, helping our intestines relax, release, and rejuvenate. Their extensive medical experience puts us at ease, and their humanity and kindness envelop us like a cocoon…"What a discovery!
This treatment will now be part of my routine for maintaining my health. With my 60th birthday just around the corner, better late than never!"Testimonial shared by a patient. Experiences and results may vary from person to person.
FAQ – Colon Hydrotherapy
These terms generally refer to the same procedure: the controlled introduction of warm, filtered water into the colon via the rectum, followed by its evacuation. At La Clinique Naturelle, we primarily use the term “colonic hydrotherapy,” but the terms “colonic irrigation” and “colonic cleansing” are also commonly used.
The session takes place in a dedicated room, ensuring privacy. A sterile, single-use cannula is gently inserted rectally. Filtered lukewarm water is then gradually introduced and drained through a closed-loop system. The therapist guides the session and may perform gentle abdominal massages.
Coverage may be available through certain supplemental insurance plans, depending on your policy, the therapist you choose, and the criteria for coverage.
Marie-Anne Geiser and Nathalie Favre-Coutillet are ASCA-certified. However, this certification does not automatically guarantee reimbursement.
We recommend that you check directly with your supplemental insurance provider before your appointment, providing them with the therapist’s name and the specific service.
It is generally not necessary to fast. However, it is best to avoid a heavy meal right before your appointment and opt for a light meal instead. When you schedule your appointment, you may be given some simple preparation recommendations based on your specific situation.
Yes. Colon hydrotherapy is not suitable for everyone. Certain digestive disorders, surgical procedures, cardiovascular or renal conditions, specific treatments, or other health issues may require postponing the session or seeking prior medical advice. A consultation before the treatment allows us to check for any major contraindications.
Experiences vary from person to person. Some people describe a feeling of lightness or abdominal comfort, while others may temporarily experience bowel movements, gas, or fatigue.
At La Clinique Naturelle, the first session lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes and costs CHF 260. A follow-up session lasts about one hour and costs CHF 220. Packages of multiple sessions may also be available. Current rates are listed on this page.
There is no one-size-fits-all number of sessions. The frequency depends on each person’s situation, expectations, and tolerance. During the first appointment, the therapist will discuss these matters with you to determine whether this approach is suitable and whether it makes sense to consider additional sessions.
The session should not be painful. However, some people may occasionally experience a sensation of pressure, bowel movements, gas, or mild cramping. Any pain or unusual sensation should be reported to the therapists.
Sessions are conducted at La Clinique Naturelle in Geneva by Marie-Anne Geiser, an MCO-certified naturopath and ASCA-certified therapist, as well as by Nathalie Favre-Coutillet, a nurse and ASCA-certified therapist. Both are trained in the practice of colonic hydrotherapy.
Some people are interested in colon hydrology when they experience constipation, bloating, or digestive discomfort. However, these symptoms can have many causes. When they are persistent or unusual, it is important to consult a healthcare professional to determine the cause before considering a complementary approach.

Faced with the saturation of work, responsibilities, stress, overconsumption of food, dʹalcohol and medication, and pollution, some people decide to treat themselves by "emptying the belly". At the Clinique naturelle in Geneva, Marie-Anne Geiser offers her patients colon hydrology, a kind of thorough enema. These therapies are fashionable, but are they recent? Behind the idea of a bodily emptying, isnʹt there the dream of a psychological and symbolic cleansing? Sociologist Francesco Panese, professor of social studies of science and medicine at the University of Lausanne, has long been interested in these practices.
