What is bloating?

Bloating is caused by the accumulation of gas in the intestines (the accumulation of air in the stomach is called aerophagia).

Gas accumulating in the intestines can cause abdominal pain and flatulence (especially after lunch). This common condition can cause uncomfortable sensations of bloating and distension, but is generally benign in most cases.

Understanding the causes and symptoms of bloating can help you better manage these unpleasant sensations. Bloating is caused by the fermentation or putrifaction of certain foods, as well as when air is swallowed while eating, drinking or talking.

When should you see a doctor?

If the pain is acute or chronic, or if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as intense abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss or changes in bowel habits, we strongly recommend that you consult your doctor.

Hygiene and nutrition to reduce bloating

A few changes in our daily routine can sometimes help us return to normal transit:

  • Eat slowly and chew well to reduce air intake.
  • Avoid foods that trigger bloating (known as fermentable foods), such as beans, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, garlic, leeks, salsify, sweets and dairy products for some people.
  • Drink enough water to aid digestion, especially before and between meals (but not too much).
  • Exercise regularly, which can help move gas through the digestive system.
  • Avoid excessive consumption of soft drinks and chewing gum.

For personalized support, you can consult a nutritionist who will help you put together your meal plan. For more information, click here.

Colon hydrology for bloating?

Bloating can be due to constipation, but also to a disturbance in the balance of intestinal bacteria.

Hydrological cleansing of the large intestine removes accumulated, encrusted matter. This helps restore the stool elimination process.

Hydrology also helps to rebalance the intestinal flora (in particular by adding certain elements such as probiotics to the water used for cleansing).

Chi Nei Tsang for bloating?

Chi Nei Tsang is a deep therapeutic belly massage. This massage will drain each of the internal organs (nei tsang) and boost their functionality.

Mechanically, this massage improves digestive comfort, notably by reducing bloating and stimulating transit. It will help you evacuate accumulated gas.

Osteopathy, an aid against bloating

Osteopathy can play an important role in the management of digestive disorders.

The therapist's first objective is to identify the cause of the bloating. To do this, he or she performs a palpatory examination of the digestive tract and your entire posture.

Using gentle manipulations, he releases blockages that may be caused by restrictions in digestive mobility, or by direct or indirect postural compensations (pelvis, spine). Sometimes, he can also work at cranial level.
